Report: Villa 2-2 Sunderland

A Jeremain Lens goal snatched Sunderland a 2-2 draw at Aston Villa this afternoon, after two Scott Sinclair goals had given the home team a first-half lead.

Sunderland were in the mood to find their first league win of the season from the start, and the Black Cats' early dominance paid off as M'Vila gave the Mackems the lead on 9 minutes with a 25-yard free kick which sneaked past Brad Guzan.

Villa came storming back, Sinclair felled by Lee Cattermole in the Sunderland box. The winger dragged himself to his feet to slot past Costel Pantilimon.

Sunderland struggled to recover from Sinclair's quick response, and the home team twice came close to nicking a lead as Ashley Westside and Gana fired wide.

Villa eventually took the lead on 41 minutes, when Jordan Amavi found Sinclair with an inch perfect cross for the winger's second goal.

Sunderland started the second half well - substitute Steven Fletcher woke Guzan up with a header, before elder statesman  Jermaine Defoe fired a long-range effort well wide.

Jeremain Lens broke Villa hearts on 52 minutes, dribbling past Ciaran Clark to fire past the hapless Guzan.

Villa livened up then - Gana and Bacuna squandering chances to restore the lead, before Rudy Gestede - static and ineffective for most of the game - glanced a header wide from an Amavi cross.

Pantilimon produced a good save to keep out Ashley Westside on 81 minutes, before Gestede pulled a chance wide.

Micah Richards could have gifted Villa the three points before the end, but his header from a Westwood corner went over the bar.
